Sony’s PlayStation Gaming Empire

Sony’s PlayStation franchise is one of the most successful gaming franchises in the world with over 560m consoles sold since 1994. This implies an average of 21.6m units sold every year.

The most successful console till date appears to be the PlayStation 2. In its highest selling year (2002), the PS2 console sold over 22m units. Approximately 160m units of the PS2 were sold between 1999 and 2012 FY. This is followed by its PS4 which has sold about 115m consoles from 2013 till date. The success of Sony’s PlayStation was evident in the buzz surrounding the release of its latest console, the PlayStation 5 in 2020. This console was reported to have sold over 2m units on its dual launch dates of 12th and 19th November 2020.
