S&P 500 Index….Part II

As at 19th November, the S&P 500 Index had generated a total Year-To-Date (YTD) return of 12.62% (inclusive of a dividend return of 1.85%). This performance however comprises a mixed performance from its various component sectors.

The data used in this post was gotten from Fidelity Design and #SlickCharts. Data obtained as at 17.11.2020 reveal that Information Technology (IT) is the best performing sector with a YTD price return of 32.71% followed by consumer discretionary with 27.11% and communication services with 17.59% rounding up the top 3 performing sectors. As observed with the best performing sectors, the COVID-19 pandemic also had a significant impact on the worst performing sectors. This can be observed with the YTD return of -40.3% in the energy sector, -10.51% for the financials sector and -2.78% for the real estate sector. These were the only sectors to record a negative YTD price return.

On an individual stock per sector basis, Carrier Global Corp in the industrials sector recorded the best YTD price return of 238%. For consumer discretionary the best performing stock was Etsy with a YTD return of 184% while NVIDIA Corp was the best performing stock under IT with 130% rounding up the top 3. The best performing stock for the energy sector still recorded a YTD loss of 2.1%

As expected, the worst performing stock was from the energy sector, Occidental Petroleum Corp. with a YTD return of -69%. The worst performing stock under the consumer discretionary was Carnival Corp with a YTD return of -65%. This was followed by American Airlines under Industrials with a YTD return of -55%. The best of the worst performing stocks per sector was from Healthcare with Mylan N.V recording a YTD return of -21% followed by Fox Corp under Communication services with -27% and Tyson Foods under consumer staples with -29%.

These performances are a reflection of the impact of COVID-19 on several sectors of the economy as we have noticed some sectors with a more damaging hit than others. Does any information here interest you? Let’s know in the comment section. 👇🏿
